Set upon a hill overlooking Firenze, Piazzale Michelangelo is a spectacular location to witness the sunset over the renaissance city and the applause that follows is a true indication of the impact the scene has upon the casual onlookers. Yet another statue of David stands in the middle of the car park for travelers to rest their weary feet, rising high above the city the artist decorated so passionately.
The statue of David portrays the ancient hero who killed his opponent, Goliath with a mere slingshot. Michelangelo sculpted David as he would have looked before the fight, with a slingshot over his left shoulder, standing tall and focused. The original statue by Michelangelo is in Galleria dell’ Accademia in Florence and copies stand in front of Palazzo Vecchio in Piazza Signora and here in Piazzale Michelangelo.
The historic centre of Florence was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1982. It is widely regarded as one of the most beautiful cities in the world.
