I’ll spare you all the gory facts on the Redback spider…. Google’s a good place to start if you would like to know the gruesome habits of these unsentimental sheilas ;)

I spotted this one in a not very nice place -perched up on the latch of the back gate – by the time I returned with my camera she had scurried on a little way.

I could not help but do a bit of selective colouring, her bright red slash was so vibrant I couldn’t help accentuating it by knocking out all the other hues =)

Taken with the 12mp DSLR Pentax (with a 50/75 lens, hence the slight lack of detail) and selective colour done in Adobe PSCS

Its a great shot and treatment (great title too)… Last one I saw was this summer underneath a table I was going to move (lucky I checked)..

  • Thanks Sharon =)

hmm, I wish I could say that sightings were as far apart as yours, we have heaps here, they are one of our top 3 most prolific lol. I forgot to put surface spray on the outdoor table after I washed it one time, a month later I found 31 redbacks under the top!
not often that we great beauties like her tho, the general population are smaller and not so red – I think they must be younger.

Eeeww…..what can I say…..hate them! Good work though!

  • lol! thanks julie =) yes, I hate them too, but in a way am facinated by them, how such a tiny little thing can be so dangerous… I nearly lost my father to one when I was just little, so I’ve always had a kind of morbid facination for them lol..

I am not a massive fan of Spiders so I guess my next comment is going to sound silly… But I really want to go to Australia so I can get close to these creates and try and get some shots such as this. Your use of selective colour really emphasises the bright red and does bring a sense of lethality as it contrasts with a monochrome background.
I really do like this one, nicely done :)

  • aaw thank you! haha, who would have thought, Redbacks on travel brochures next? lol, they are a nuisance but thankfully attractive ones in a way, and deadly too…. you aren’t doing to bad for someone who’s not a fan of spiders, I think that’s two of about 3 spider pix I have that you’ve found now lol! cheers mate :)
