Thanks for the comment John…
I paddle in many very remote locations, many times places that have had no human contact in many years – the animals are not as spooked and it makes for great wildlife shots. I’ve played tag for hours with alligators in the boat, you do not want to venture too close during the time the female is tending her nest – about the only time one will attack a person.

the babies make funny sounds… we ran a boat ashore into a nest by mistake a long time ago.. and we ran the heck out of there when we heard the babies.. wonderful shot. good luck in the challenge

Thanks Angie. I spend a lot of time in the swamps paddling my handmade pirogue & encounter these very misunderstood creatures all the time.
This was shot just south of New Orleans off Jean Lafitte Island.
I have a shot of a group of babies I manage to capture at Lake Martin last year in my portfolio here on RB.

I would have loved to see this :)

I can’t be 100% certain – but I go to this area a lot and have for several years, I am almost sure this is the same alligator I have watched for quite sometime.
They have habits just like every other living thing, this guy likes to play tag with me. I can paddle to get closer and he swims away, not fast or alarmed. Then he will turn and watch me as if to say “what are you waiting for” and again I will paddle closer and he will swim away. We play this game for hours sometimes.

I love this shot ! I too spend many hours in my gahnew (not sure of the spelling) I live in Florida and theres a place called Fisheating Creek , and many times I have been so far back not a person for miles and miles. This is a great shot, I miss more then I get to shoot, I think its the motor that scares them. It’s only a 25 horse but its enough to scare them back into the water. I am always trying for a shot like this. Great one !!!!

I don’t use an outboard motor when I shoot in the swamps. It seems the vibration of the motor, can be picked up by every living creature!
I paddle for the most part – I have an electric trolling motor and a deep cycle marine battery on my pirogue but use it very little – I mainly use the battery to recharge any batteries (laptop, cellphone, camera, GPS) on extended trips.

That’s a marvelous shot – interesting monotones here, but the detail is wonderful.
KSkinner replied
Thanks Gracey. It was late in the evening and I really was hesitant to use a flash for fear he would slide off into the water. I had very little time to get these shots as it was getting dusk dark and I still had about a two mile paddle through the swamp to the camp.
