Drinking Squirrel

Squirrel sneaking a drink from the murky swamp waters hanging upside down from a Bald Cypress tree on Bayou Desiard – Ouachita Parish Louisiana.

This is one of my favorite shots and honestly one of my first paddling trips to Bayou DeSiard after returning to Louisiana. I had been away for about 15 years. This scene was less than 50 yards from the Public Boat Launch at Frenchman’s Bend. I have seen this behavior displayed many times since this shot, but oddly never noticed it before the day this image was captured.

That is one heck of a shot! You really should add this one to the squirrel group; it’s absolutely one of a kind!

  • KSkinner replied

Thanks Bonnie, still finding my way around but as soon as I figure it out I’ll post it there. I shot this from my pirogue, it’s a pretty common occurrence around where I shoot – I have seen this same behavior several times. Now if I can only catch a gator making a meal off one doing this then I will have a super shot!

Hello Gracey – still one of mine as well, being in the right place at the right time by accident always produces one off images it seems.

Thanks Kelly, this is a habit I had never witnessed before this day – but since then I have encountered this conduct many times. Alligators are very patient creatures so I assume this is a defence action to slip a drink of water….

    David Clark

great shot – I assume you were in a boat to get this? you have some great wildlife shots here – dave - thanks for checking out my site also -

  • KSkinner replied

Thanks for your comment – I did capture this image from my pirogue (small Cajun boat) – it’s about the only way to get off the beaten path in this area. I will be uploading a lot more wildlife shots soon.

what an amazing image! love it KSkinner!

  • KSkinner replied

Thanks Paul… pretty interesting to watch, but it’s hard to get the full impact without being there – you know the old saying if you saw it you missed the shot. I’ve studied this behavior several times without my camera in my face.
