Two brave Chinstrap Penguins (pygoscelis antarcticus ) stroll along the beach on Deception Island, South Shetlands. This actively volcanic island, which basically surrounds an old volcanic caldera, is known for its warm waters and as we found out, its terrible weather. Penguins don’t nest here so the ones we saw were obviously on holiday! ;o)
Despite the blizzard and freezing wind, some of our ship’s passengers took part in a swim in the ocean, my hubby Nick being the first to venture in. (I am blackmailing Nick not to show his picture on here). My excuse for not participating was that I had to hold the camera gear and I’d already slipped over enough times on slimy rocks and ended up in the Southern Ocean brine to last me a lifetime.
Apologies for the dire picture quality – I was one of the few idiots to actually take my cameras ashore and they got absolutely soaked. I do NOT recommend anyone try this a home!
