Pink Pingos (Adelie Penguin Chicks, South Orkneys) by

An endearing clump of fledgling Adelie Penguins (pygoscelis adeliae) – note the moulting mohican on the right. Adelies (with Emperors) are the world’s southernmost breeding penguins, only found on the Antarctic Continent or nearby offshore islands such as this – Coronation Island, South Orkneys.

Oh yes, the pink is from the krill they’ve been eating and rolling around in….. they’ll scrub up well once they go to sea.

What a great looking group ! The mohican is sooo cute !
(we only saw eggs as our visit was in december !)

  • Thanks John! We specially chose January for the chicks but a lot of the chicks were quite large like these and ready to fledge. Fortunately on the Antarctic Peninsula the breeding program was a few weeks delayed and there were some tiny chicks, even the occasional egg.

They have this Krill Color-Scheme in common with Flamingos, eh? What a chorus line, ready to do some synchronized kicking. And there’s always that odd-guy-out. What’s he looking at? Great shot. Such a lovely bunch.

  • Thanks Sheila. The only difference here between these pingos and mingos is that these guys ROLL in the krill as well as eating it, hahaha! ;o) I think mohican-hair is admiring his pink footwear! ;o)

I think the one on the far right was up to more than rolling in krill, he has that guilty look about him. :-)
Wonderful photograph Krys; so nicely composed, and you couldn’t have asked for better poses.

  • Thanks Richard! There were hoards of posers to choose from on this little island. Knee deep in penguins! ;o)
