Greater Roadrunner (geococcyx californianus)

My hero from the cartoons, unfortunately we don’t have any wild ones over here so this fella posed for me at Cotswold Wildlife Park. He looks like he needs a little exercise! ;o)

Background given one of my critter special treatments to remove distractions.

Canon EOS 50D with Canon EF 70-200mm L IS f/4

Yes, I believe so… I know my dad has some pics of them. I think from Arizona. I will have to ask… I don’t think I’ve ever seen one. I don’t think we’d see them in trees either, but running on the road. hehe =) doh.

  • Well since they have the name “californianus” in the latin I assumed they’d be hopping up and down your street!!! ;o))) AI guy from Montana sent me a pic of one once (and Wile E Coyote) ;o)))

Looked in my field guide. Same name, “greater roadrunner”, located in Southwest and southern Great Plains. = )

There are roadrunners in this part of the US, especially in the SW. The one you photographed looks like a young one or a different species. I loved those cartoons, too. The terrain where I live reminds me of the terrain in those cartoons. Excellent work! x

  • Thanks Lori! You must live in a beautiful place – I love the Roadrunner country in the cartoons! ;o)
