Deep in Thought

Juvenile female Amur Leopard (panthera pardus orientalis) “Kiska”, born and bred at Marwell Wildlife, Hampshire, England. There are only an estimated 35 of these beautiful cats in the wild. Fortunately many zoos are keeping and breeding these critters to prevent them from extinction. I feel privileged that these guys live just down the road from me! ;o)

All things bright and beautiful; all creatures great and small; all things wise and wonderful; the Lord God made them all! James Herriot thought that little poem was good enough for the titles of his marvelous books, and that’s what came to mind when I viewed this magnificent portrait. Thank you, Krys, for showcasing the bright and beautiful, the great and small, the wise and wonderful! I never tire of seeing the marvelous diversity in creation through your lens and through your magnanimous soul.

  • Krys Bailey replied

Aw thanks Bonnie – I ought to be kicking myself to realise how lucky I am to be able to SEE these critters and share them with you all! Funny how we often take for granted the things around our home area, don’t you think? ;o)

Wonderful close up on this contemplative cat. I can think of a number of great captions for this one such as “Hmm, the little photographer over there, nope … ate one of those for lunch. How about the guy in the gray suit … nah”.

Very nice capture, as always your pictures are great. I bet he is contemplating an escape tunnel . I certainly would, if I where locked up in those relative small confinements for such a big cat.

I get sometimes very frustrated with Marwell zoo, well you know me, traditional Zoo’s in general. They do nothing for preservation, but often cause psychological problems in the animal. None of the animals they breed could ever be released to the wild. Even the RSPCA agree with that one, especially for Elephants.

Sorry, I am stepping down from my soap box right now. ;)

  • Krys Bailey replied

I agree with you partly CJ – but without the likes of Marwell, these precious Amur Leopards would soon become extinct – if that isn’t preservation or conservation, then I don’t know what is!? ;o)

  • C J Hummel - Foxfire Gallery

    C J Hummel - ...

Sorry Krys, we have to agree to disagree on this one.
The Armur Leopards are not helped or conserved. It has all to do with business and a Victorian view of experimenting under the false guise of science. The leopards could be much better introduced and reared in their natural environment, which still exists. All scientific and Zoological papers written now confirm this. zoo’s are just their for your entertainment and nothing to do with preservation whatsoever. These are not my words but of many experts.including prominent [professors of Brighton University and eminent Zoologists working with Earth watch a science orientated charity.

  • Krys Bailey replied

Marwell have now changed their name from Marwell Zoo to Marwell Wildlife as they do a lot of good work outside the confines of the zoo, in the critters’ native countries. I don’t think you can place all “zoos” in the same category. Anyway – entertainment and enlightenment serve a very good purpose, imho. Without being able to see these amazing animals for ourselves, we might be less sensitive to their plight in the wild. In other words, a small number of captive animals are ambassadors for their species, and that cannot be a bad thing! Can I please just post photos of these gorgeous critters without starting World War III??? ;o)
