Hoo are Yoo???

This young male Snowy Owl (bubo scandiacus) seemed to take a sudden interest in what was going on in my direction. It couldn’t be anything to do with me as we’re quite old friends now. When he’s fully grown, he will lose the bars on his feathers and be almost totally white. Birdworld, Surrey.

I think he’s wondering if that’s a little mouse hanging from your wrist … “could it be, maybe it’s a mouse, nope looks like a camera strap, well … maybe … Hummm”.

Krys, his Latin name reminds me of Bubba, so Bubba it is! And his last name, scandiacus, matches with his expression. He seems absolutely scandalized about something and is expressing his suspicions and displeasure. Funny what words can do to our minds and the direction they can take us in our thinking! Back to business! This portrait of the snowy owl is splendid, every soft white feather clearly visible, yellow eyes locked on the camera, and tilt of the head adding to the attitude that tells the story. You know how to do it, that’s for sure! Bravo!

  • Krys Bailey replied

Thanks Bonnie! I admit I often think the latin names are quite appropriate! He was yawning earlier on but I didn’t manage to get off any shots of that unfortunately! Still I was mollified when he started posing like this. I’m not a great fan of animals yawning pics! ;o)

  • Krys Bailey replied

Thanks Kimmie!! I’ve met several of his cousins here and there. They are mostly in dark enclosures but their being bright white is a great aid to photography! What do you think Sidney would think of him???

  • Kimberly Palmer
