Ruffles

Krys Bailey

Ruffles

The Chaffinch is one of my favourite garden birds. They are colourful, cheeky and have a lovely warbling song that always puts me in mind of springtime. This little fella, photographed in our “white out” the other day, looks to be a youngster as the top of his head is not the typical pure grey. If there are any birdie experts out there who could clarify this, I would be much obliged!

Beautiful pose and coloring. I have no idea how you handhold this lens so well.

  • Krys Bailey replied

Thanks John! Practice is how I handhold the lens! I can hold at 1/250 usually with no problem but prefer to breathe now and again! ;o)

a beautiful capture krys, boy have we had some snow, more forcast and freezing overnight too, local buses only just running a small service, roll on spring lol dawnx

  • Krys Bailey replied

Thanks Dawn! Poor you! On TV I saw those pics of the Clifton Bridge in snow the shots of where they’ve shut down the Severn Bridge! We have had no snow here at all since Wednesday – it did snow earlier but it was too wet to stick. I don’t think I envy you guys! Stay indoors and keep creating those great pics, why don’t you?! ;o)

Very cute, lovely capture… I’ve just been stood at the end of our garden trying to photograph the birds, but with four dogs by my feet, the birds were surprisingly shy.. can’t think why ;-)

  • Krys Bailey replied

Thanks Jennifer – I cheat! I shoot these through the window! That way they only get spooked by each other! If I opened the window and they saw my long white lens pointing at them, they’d be off! ;o)

I used to be able to handhold… I’m too shaky even with “only” a 300mm. Tripod, beanbag, bracing against a tree… only way I can manage it.

What a great shot Krys. That is one beautiful species. We don’t have them here I don’t think.

  • Krys Bailey replied

Thanks Andy! We don’t have many colourful birds in Merrie Olde England so I am delighted to be able to show off one of them to you. I think this fluffball is confined to Europe and North Africa! ;o)

  • Krys Bailey replied

Thanks Richard! I’ve been struggling to get a decent, low ISO shot of these critters and this one obliged and posed for me! ;o)

What a fine coat of feathers he’s got, Krys, and you captured him at just the right moment when he was displaying them so proudly, just like a bodybuilder flexing his muscles. Marvelous marvelous marvelous!

  • Krys Bailey replied

Thanks Bonnie! I wasn’t even aware Chaffinches even had a green patch on their backs until I shot this!!! One of our more colourful birdies (and we don’t have many of those!) ;o)

Beautiful shot—love the detail!!! Looks like he is trying to get warm!

  • Krys Bailey replied

Thanks Michael! I expect he was indeed trying to get warm – it was our heaviest snowfall in nearly 20 years – the poor little bird must have been totally confused by the white stuff!! ;o)
