This female Blackbird, among other featherballs, has been doing a great job this winter in devouring the red crab apple berries on this tree in our back garden. The red fruit are a real mess when they fall on the ground and get trodden underfoot, so “Bravo” to all my feathered friends! ;o)

p.s. just look at that long yellow tongue!!!

Stunning shot as we have come to expect from you Krys! We’ve just planted a crab apple tree in the hopes of attracting more birds…watch this space!

  • Krys Bailey replied

Thanks Sandra! I planted this tree when our house was new nearly 20 years ago. This is the first year that the birds have been this interested in the berries! Weird! ;o)

She’s a greedy little beggar! Nice photo Krys.

  • Krys Bailey replied

You bet! The blackbirds, pigeons and doves have done a great job in clearing off these messy berries! Funny how they never got interested in them until this winter! ;o)

Fantastic capture Krys…..perfect clarity and fine detail….love your timing here :-) ...hope you are well my friend !

  • Krys Bailey replied

I’m fine thanks Joyce – hope you are too! I get a lot of entertaining birdies outside my window but the light is bad this time of year. When it is spring and the light is better, there are too many leaves on this tree! I can’t win! ;o)

This is wonderful, Krys! I haven’t been commenting much lately so I missed this one. How do you get such good shots of blackbirds and maintain the right light/color balance in the background? I lose all the detail with underexposed plumage or get some detail and overexpose the background! It takes a real PRO to know how to strike the critical balance. LOVE IT!

  • Krys Bailey replied

Thanks Bonnie! The female blackbirds are quite easy to shoot – I still have trouble with the boy blackbirds with their inky plumage, especially when shooting at higher ISOs like in this shot.
