The Nursery

The Nursery

A completely opportunistic shot. My husband Nick and I were picnicking in a beautiful leafy little valley in the Brenta Dolomites of northern Italy, when Nick spotted this. It appears to be a solitary wasp of sorts, sitting on a fist-sized comb and she is feeding and tending to her larvae which you can actually see in the cells. As with many macros, I couldn’t appreciate what was going on until I processed the image. Ain’t nature wonderful?! ;o)

Nature “IS” amazing. Look at those intricate and perfectly shaped cells, and those little babies inside. Whoa…. you captured an amazing photo here Krys.

  • Krys Bailey replied

Thanks, Sher. I was even more lucky that I was already geared up with a macro lens on one of my cameras (I only use two cameras, lets not brag!) :o)

A beautiful capture. A colony of wasps have set up home on the inside of my shed door. It’s a most amazing structure but I won’t be able to see as much as your shot shows.
A wonderful insight into a tiny world.

hmmm – every year I spray the wasps nests to get rid of them; maybe BEFORE I spray them and hopefully before my little 3 yr. old grandson get stung – I can capture some kind of photo…wow, Krys this is just fantastic! And yes, I hate to say it but the babies ARE cute and do resemble tiny teddy bears!

  • Krys Bailey replied

Thank you, my friend. We must all try to remember that even bugs we don’t like are God’s creatures and don’t intentionally mean us any harm. Please, don’t photograph them and kill them … photograph them, yes, but keep your grandson away, leave the wasps unharmed, and show the world the wasp beauty in your photos, friend or foe!
