Lookout Post

Reed Boat and Lookout Tower on one of the floating Uros Islands which lay within the marshy region near Puno on Lake Titicaca, Peru.

The Uros Islands were built and are continutally being rebuilt using the dried local totora reed or rush. Huts and boats are built out of the same material. The Uros islanders, who are an even older civilisation than the Incas, survive by fishing, handicrafts and tourism.

wow this is such a wonderful shot, it looks like a movie pic from the movies of the 1950’s, me I would have looked around and then maybe taken the boat for a short ride and if there was someone around, would have asked for premission to climb the tower, off to see if you did and got some shots.

  • Krys Bailey replied

Thanks Roslyn. We did get to ride in a larger version of one of these boats. I’ll perhaps post a pic later on. It was weird walking on floating reeds at 13,000 feet in the middle of a gigantic lake!

The photo is great, and I like the explanation you wrote alongside it. This really adds to the photo even more.

  • Krys Bailey replied

Thank you, Richard. It is a pleasure to describe some of the wonders I have been privileged to visit. ;o)
