Darling Babe

A poem about a mother’s love for her son.

I wrote this about my son, Aidan, one night after checking on him in bed. I did not know that at that time I was pregnant with my daughter, Julia. I am not a poet and have never written poems before or since, but perhaps a combination of immeasurable love and pregnancy hormones were enough to produce one nice poem that I’m proud of.

Darling Babe belongs to the following groups:

Childhood

Since you came into my life, darling babe
I’ve loved to watch you sleep
In awe of you, so in love with you
I’d brush your velvet cheek

Just to stand there as you slept, darling babe
Would fill me with such joy
God’s gift to me, a miracle to see
My heaven sent baby boy

The time it flies so quickly, darling babe
You’ve traded your crib for a bed
Five years have passed, preschool at last
No longer a babe, so you’ve said

But though the years may change you, darling babe
Forever my babe you will be
No matter how old, the tales will be told
Of that infant so precious to me

It’s not that I loved you more then, darling babe
For each day I love you more
I’m always amazed, how the limit is raised
That my capacity to love you does soar

So please don’t mind too much, darling babe
If I call you “baby” when you’re a man
A child’s the most wonderous thing a lifetime can bring
When it’s your turn you’ll understand

Well that sure tugged at the heart strings!!!!! My youngest is now almost 26 and I still refer to him as my baby…...and the three of them as my little chickens. ....

Ah yes, very nicely written. I still call my son “Binky” and he’s 23, never does a son outgrow his Mommy.
