Dead Man's Pond

A morbid history of St. John’s… the hill in the background is known as Gibbets Hil, it is where all the criminals were hung in public executions. The body of water at the base of the hill is where the executioner would throw the bodies when they were dead. The pond is known as “Dead Man’s Pond”.

this is just fantastic – the colour and treatment gives it that sense of drama – to think it was the norm to hang and throw bodies years ago and now even the story gives you goosebumps – beautiful image.

The lighting on top of the hill is superbly timed and the very wide angle shows off the scale of this shot incredibly well.

Love the light on the apex of the mountain combined with darker pond in the fore ground. Isn’t it strange how often a beautiful image comes from a scene that has a dark past.
