Taxi

Taxi, she called
The night dark as death
The driver pulled in
And waited.
A lonely old woman appeared
And got in the car
There was no intended destination
Just to reminisce.
They drove through the city
She pointed out
Her first house with her husband
And the ballroom she danced at as a child
The city never slept, it watched over them
Its lights like a barrier that kept death away
The driver listened solemnly
Then dusk began
And she gave an address
The sun was the executioner
Aiding death himself.
So deeply touched
He charged her no fee
She thanked him sincerely
For the gratitude he’s shown
That he’s made an old woman happy
So she can pass peacefully.
He heard the door shut behind him
The sound of the doors of life closing.
