I'm more afraid of your ignorance than you are of my dog by

A big “Thank you” to Michael for allowing me to use his beautiful and sweet rescue pitbull, LuLu, as the model for this shirt!

Did you know that the trusted family pet “Jack the Brindle dog” on “Little House on the Prairie” was a pitbull? Jack was not the only pitbull famous for being a faithful family dog, as Helen Keller’s beloved companion was also a pitbull. Then there was Petey, the dog from “The Little Rascals” who was indeed an American pitbull terrier.

It seems that many people have forgotten how America has loved this breed over time, and have forgotten that many choose this breed of dog today for a reliable and loving family dog. This was the breed that was affectionately known as “America’s Nanny Dog.”

Many celebrities have chosen this wonderful breed over time, including Fred Astaire, President Roosevelt, Mary Tyler Moore, Thomas Edison, Brad Pitt, Ann Bancroft, President Woodrow Wilson, Humphrey Bogart, John Stewart and Bernadette Peters, just to name a few.

Pitbulls are loyal, stable and intelligent dogs that are eager to please, and strive to take on the behaviors that their guardians instill in them. Their behavior is a reflection of the care, training, and socialization (or lack thereof) given by their owners.

The stigma associated with the breed has been caused by careless dog owners who do not socialize or properly train their dogs. Any breed of dog that is left tied in a backyard without experiencing the outside world is bound to have issues. It also seems that careless dog owners tend to choose the pit bull in particular, possibly due to it’s “tough” reputation.

Therefore the majority of neglected, untrained dogs appear to be pitbulls. But even with all these neglected dogs, there are even more sweet, trained and well socialized pit bulls that belong to loving families. According to rigorous testing by The National Canine Temperament Testing Association, the golden retriever, poodle, border collie, English setter, German pointer and numerous other breeds are considered more likely to become aggressive than pit bulls.

The average score of the 122 breeds tested was a mere 77 percent. Pitbulls scored a 95.2 percent on these testings. (The higher the better.)

Not only have pitbulls scored extremely well on temperament tests, but they have been serving key roles in search and rescue efforts, excel in agility training and work nationwide as therapy and service dogs.

Pit bulls are highly trainable, which has been beneficial for anyone wanting a wonderful companion or service dog, but that same trait has also proven to be a downfall when the breed is exploited.

You might find this hard to believe when what is highlighted in the news regarding pitbulls seems to be negative, but there are many more positive stories concerning pit bulls than negative ones. By simply browsing the Internet, one can find an abundance of positive, reputable information about pit bulls.

Another aspect that needs to be mentioned is that most attacks by other dog breeds are misclassified as “pit bulls” by media reports. The fact is, there are far more stories of pitbulls helping, or saving lives, than endangering or ending them.

It seems that the term “pitbull” is only splashed across the headlines when the story is negative. Unfortunately, fear and negativity sells, and this breed is paying the price. If only we were to take the time to look beyond the negative hype, we would find the truth about pitbulls.

Kristina I so agree with you, I volunteer for the SPCA here in Las Vegas and most of the dogs are Pit Bulls and most of them have been abused and tortured and are scared to death until they get to know the staff and just bond. I am upset with the world that tortures Animals period but it is all about Pits lateley which goes around like a wildfire. My Father is Blind and always had German Shepherds and they are great but several became very aggressive and turned on us because they can become very protective of their owner so any animal will turn on you if you abuse them not just a Pit why do I know that I tell you why….Debo a handsome big Pit was so much abused they had to amputate his hind leg….but he was the sweetest and most affectioned guy…Freckles only 6 month old was almost killed by a baseball bat keep in mind he is deaf and only 6 month old his hind leg was also amputated and guess what his owner did it. I am upset and frustrated that these cruel no heart people get away with this with just a darn warning it makes me very mad. Sorry but I am more scared of some smaller dogs which are known of biting more than any other dog than of a Pit. One day Owners will hopefully understand that dogs need training, playtime and most of all an Owner that is responsible. I have adopted Lulu about 12 years ago, Dexter 11 years ago and Zarco who I rescued from a teribble owner who sure is a handfull almost 3 years ago none of them is a Pit but that does not matter…if I would neglect any of them Dexter would die because he is a bad diabetic and Zarco the Portuguese Waterdog would turn on me because he is very hyper and Lulu is a cat she is just happy lol…but my point is if you can’t handle a pet (DOG) than dont get one. Thank you so much Kristina for posting this and I am sorry for writing this long comment…I could write a book about this.
Here is Freckles being adopted by his Foster Parents…what a great moment Freckles was so very happy :)

  • Oh my goodness Susanne! I somehow missed this wonderful comment of yours! Thank you so much for this. I have to say that I agree with everything that you have voiced here!

We have our beautiful rescued pit bull Nina. She is the sweetest, most affectionate and intellegent dog I have ever had the pleasure to meet! And, what you say about being more worried about the little dogs that bite is absolutely true! We’ve been walking Nina and on several occasions she’s been bitten by little, yappy dogs. one time she was bitten right in the face! Her response? She yelped and ran to hide, lying down behind my legs. Meanwhile, as we walk her through town people actually move their children out of her path or cross the street to be a “safe” distance from her! It’s ridiculous!

My daughter has done a lot of volunteer work at local shelters through her teen years. She’s been bitten or nipped many times, never by a pit but always by a little dog!
