Dinner Surprise! by kristenterrana

“Dinner Surprise” is a watercolor illustration based on an Italian superstition.
The superstition is that if you put your shoes on the table, it invites death into the house! In the picture, you can see the husband is enjoying his espresso, completely oblivious to his “loving” wife serving him supper. What an interesting supper, indeed! There are hints implying the superstition if you look closely.
Meant to be humorous, with a twist of irony, this illustration is part of a series about superstitions…perhaps which will one day be converted into a children’s book.

This is also an English superstition. When I was a boy, my mother would be furious if I put even a new pair of shoes (in a box) on the table. I think the superstition originated because in mining and seafaring communities, if there was an accident, the man’s body would be brought home and laid out on the kitchen table; probably with his boots still on. This is a great representation of the superstition … well painted.
