Krishna Nahow-Ryall is an Australian South Sea Islander
born in Bowen, Queensland and currently lives in Brisbane, Queensland

Between 1863 and 1906, some 60,000 Pacific Islanders from Vanuatu, Solomon Islands, the Loyalty Islands of New Caledonia and other western Pacific nations were blackbirded that is forcibly taken by means of trickery and kidnapping from their island homes to be transported as slaves to Queensland for the exploitation of colonial Australia.

Krishna’s maternal ancestors were ‘blackbirded’ from their island homes of Vanualava and Mota Lava, Banks Islands and Tanna Island in Vanuatu and were taken to Ayr to create and maintain sugar cane plantations in Queensland, Australia.

Krishna’s approach is from the perspective of the her family history experience. While simultaneously investigating the collective memory of South Sea Islander blackbirding experience and the present day identity of of the South Sea Islander Diaspora.

Krishna works with text, multimedia, photography, ephemeral materials, textiles , land and colour: states and matters used interpretatively to represent identity
