Watchtower by Keith Reesor
The Cubezoids converged on the Watchtower at dawn of the solstice, as they had done for centuries. The story had been told and retold by the Cubezoidial Clerics that one day the “Rounds” would return at the dawn of the new spring. Would this be the year?

Yes. This is the year they return. But, the Rounds were larger than expected and hungry. Luckily the field of sythetipods was growing well. It was a win/win for all since the Cubezoids needed to feed before the injections began and the mass transformations occured.
