Love the image love the colours…. I am particularly draw to the Julian in this one too…. for me though the light balance is wrong on the marble. drop shadow is overpowering it and something very tell tale that I overlook myself on occasion is the edges of the orb

This image would really sing by dampening the strength of the drop,
introducing a bit of inner shadow and possibly glow (subtle though) andif the edges were still as bright and as sharp after that:
select the spere and do a select feather (depending on the image size maybe 5px or so is all you’d need
follow this with a contract of similar values then invert the selection and apply a very subtle amount of gaussian blur just to take the edge off.

Best done on a copy layer or a masked layer which will then allow you to paint or erase back in areas that may be a touch sharper…

I hope you’ll forgive me for this observation and taking the liberty. I love the image and just feel that this distracted me from the overall appreciation and get asked so much about marble technique that I had to give in and make a Video Tut for it.

I think you may have already gotten it but if you want to check it out you can find it here

This one I did for PS7 as the friend I did it for originally is retired and cannot afford the later versions. However it is not that fifferent with CS – easier in fact!

I will be doing one for PSP soon too I think. despite explaining the technique several times I think people get lost (the problem being unfamiliarity with Layers and how they work) – just feel that a llittle bit of finessing will make a huge amount of difference…. in turning an already great image into a ‘can’t live without’

I feel this image is that strong – and an excellent POV too….
Love some of your recent work Keith and hope you will not take this criticism up wrongly – I am talking very fine details here. I love the luminosity Values the sphere has here right off the bat

  • Keith Reesor replied

Thank you very much Zoo!! Actually I rendered this twice. The second time I added the final triangle with a bubble value of 1. I rendered that image separately. I did notice that because of the transparency of the julian you actually see the back of the sphere through the front. I save these as .png file. I placed the sphere over an already darker spot of the julian plane. Did a select, fill with black, distort to the side, gaussian blur, reduce opacity “drop shadow”.
Unfortunately as with most of my images once I’m done with the final image, I usually dump my .psd files. I do keep my .png files of my apo fractals, but I’d have recreate this one from scratch.
I did print your tut Raindrops, Bubbles, etc. for future reference.
I love the criticism Zoo!! It’s a great way to learn, so again, Thank you so much for taking the time. I think it’s great of you!! :)
