I wrote this a decade or so ago. Not all of my teachers were like this. Not all of my memories are so cynical. But there is a truth to it. My generation had too many pay-checkers and not enough teachers.

The Greatest Lesson

what priceless information
was attained in school
I pieced together the truth of what it was to be a ‘grown-up’
by reading the apathy on my teacher’s backs
stitched into their tweed
and weighing heavily on their worn down shoulders
as they scratched hieroglyphics on the board
and mumbled meaningless nonsense into the chalk trough
words even they had no faith in

I read their disappointment
it was the one real fact
it was loud and clear but never spoken
their tremendous disappointment
not in us
they didn’t care about us
but in themselves
as appalling as this sounds
this was the greatest lesson I learned in school
and one that I am still tested on every single day.
