red kicks by KreddibleTrout

I try very hard not to promote brands. I try often to do the very opposite. I also have a very sore spot in my soul for canvas Converse shoes (or what the kids today call ‘Chucks’) as they’ve become much too damn trendy. There was a time when canvas shoes were all I wore. For many years and in many colours. Back when they were really unstylish & you had to hunt them down (like good music) cos none of the stores carried them. And they were cheap. That’s why the Ramones wore them. Not because they were ‘like totally punk rawk’ but because they had better things to spend their money on. Like Heroin. And to make it worse now the cheap kicks of the downtrodden are owned by MAJOR RUNNING SHOE CONGLOMERATE and sold by mall rock stars.
I always liked red ones. Folks used to look at my feet with scorn. Now, when I wear my red No Sweats every bitch and her brother compliments me on my ‘awesome chucks!’.

all that being said… I very much like this shot. enough to put all that petty shit aside & post it anyway. But kids, if you really want to be cool… ‘Chucks’ ain’t the way to go anymore, sorry. In fact, nothing in the mall will help you. I’m thinking wooden Dutch shoes or… sandals with wool socks.

Canon Rebel XT (x-tra trout, baby… oooooh YEAH!)

Now that’s a blooming excellent shot!! But I have to say I can sympathise…it just isn’t fun when something you love becomes too commercial and too mainstream!

  • thanks very much ursula. nothing is sacred and everything is a commodity. the final nail in the coffin was (on a rare occasion near a TV) hearing a Buzzcocks song in a car commercial a few years back. A Minivan commercial. If middle-class america knew they were being sold a reliable utility vehicle to the tune of ‘Why Can’t I Touch It?‘… who’s kidding who, they’d buy it anyway.

where did the name chucks come from anyway? they were always converse when I was in school. I love the red too.

  • yeah. me too. they’re called chucks because the Air Jordan of the 1920s, Chuck Taylor had his name attached to the little patch on the side of the shoe. The patch didn’t do anything like pump air into the shoe or initiate the internal hydraulics like the shoes today, but they were the most popular basketball shoe until a certain multinational shoe conglomerate famous for sweatshop labour and celebrity endorsements came along in the mid 80s. The same company that recently bought out old converse, hence they’re current over saturation in the malls. The same reason I switched to No Sweats.

…and that’s one to grow on! (who am I, Jimmy Shoe-guy?)

Great use of colour and cool DOF.
Like The Sixth Sense movie – RED is the colour that the human eye is attracted to most and will ‘zoom in on’ in a photo or scene. Your shot here proves it.
My eyes went – bang – down to the trainers in a blink of an eye :o)

  • thanks very much. red’s a darn fine colour alright.

Hahahaha. I love the attitude seeping through your descriptive paragraph.
I confidently can say I have never called converse shoes “Chucks” cause it just sounded like some gay slang that people thought was cool….
I love this shot and the attention to detail it has.
If I was looking in that direction the red would have caught my eye in seconds.
    Love the over-all look :)

  • thanks. It’s all about the attitude.
(I also think straight people use the term ‘Chucks’. I’ve actually never heard any of my gay friends use the term. Maybe you need an updated gay slang dictionary.)
