montreal die-in

This was in protest of the death of a cyclist on Montreal street who was hit by a motorist.
It was incredible. Rue Ste. Catherine was shut down in the late afternoon on a Saturday. Closed the city for ten minutes.
It was beautiful.
I would say that it made a lot of Montreal motorists angry, but that would mean the protesters really had no effect.

Autumn 2007.

  • Jaeda DeWalt

    Jaeda DeWalt

What an incredible photograph. Before i read the story behind it, i thought this was an image you had posed/created yourself, using models. It is flawless. I hope the protest, in some way, raises the consciousness of motorists.

  • KreddibleTrout replied

thanks a lot. just luck, which I love.
raised the blood pressure. I know that. I’m a cyclist myself and the need to raise the consciousness of motorists is an ongoing one. Raising the consciousness of government and industry needs to be done as well. Motorists get pissed because roads have always been designed specifically for cars. The road is theirs. There has to be work on every level to make cycling an accepted and integrated form of transportation in the city. Cyclists have a part to play as well being aware of themselves from a motorist’s perspective. At 37 I finally got a license and the things that I was unaware of from a driver’s standpoint surprised me.

Amazing what people are capable of when an incident draws them together, and unfortunate that it takes such a tragedy to make something like this happen.

  • KreddibleTrout replied

yeah, i think we’re all so distracted that unfortunately that’s the case. If we all took time to consider the impact we had and actively spent (like these folks) one afternoon a week working towards change things might begin to lok a little nicer for the future.
Then there is the large percent of people who genuinely don’t care.
    we still must try.

  • KreddibleTrout replied

thanks nicole. I’m a cyclist too. I actually started urban cycling on thses very steets. Montreal’s streets which are some of the most aggressive out there. By far the worst in Canada anyway. The number of cabbies who caught the bird from me were plentiful in those days. However it is everyone’s responsibility to ensure against accidents as I mentioned in my response to Jaeda DeWalt’s comment above.

I would have loved to get some shots of the motorists on the other end. Montreal drivers are notoriously aggressive. Might’ve been some great shots of them too.

he is a great friend , and the party never stops when he is around, i will tell him of you. his last name is deslandes. what acting do you do? do you like the community there, he loves it tooo cold for me!

I’ve just realized, this shot reminds me of the Radiohead video “Just” That makes this picture even better!!!

  • KreddibleTrout replied

yeah. though I’ve seen only about 10 music videos since the 80s that is one of them and it reassured me that there is occasionally an original thought in the mainstream music world. Not to say Radiohead hasn’t been forward moving, but videos. And really, the video had a separate identity from the song which is why videos don’t cut it to me.
but yes. it reminds me of that too. I take it as a compliment. thanks.

First is a Metaphorical Term as well as an actual term. First also means Superb work that is considered Number One! Also first to break barriers, first to stand out for something…Actually is not boxed into just one meaning, just like Art…

  • KreddibleTrout replied

art has more than one meaning???

my highschool art teacher was a liar. He told me it’s purpose was to pick up chicks! Mind you I think he taught Math and Gym as well so… I should have maybe not taken him at his word. He was a jerk too.

I’ll be right over to First Things. Thanks.

  • KreddibleTrout replied

I have been wanting to dig it out actually. It’s coming up on the 6th anniversary of Bush’s invasion of Iraq & the candlelight protest I attended in Fredericton New Brunswick was ( I think) the first one I shot.
I’ll try and dig it up and scan it.

  • Waleska Luker

    Waleska Luker

lol that’s quite a funny story. I find Art to be Suggestive, meaning that I could look at one thing or image and think it means something, but someone else could think differently. For example, your work is very straight forward and brilliant. However, if someone else saw this and did not read the explanation they may had though that the people involved were crazy or some mass suicide idea, who knows…But I find it great when people stand for a cause in this case saving lives, that should always be a priority or a first. Love for example for one another enough to do something so foolish should be a first. Hope is a priority and it should be a first, Faith, encountering, creativity, finding something new each day, its all about perspective. I am looking forward to seeing your interpretation of First.

  • Waleska Luker

    Waleska Luker

Both Suggestive: as in Evocative and Subjective in the case of your work. You should have followers for example…Everyone should stand for something, that’s a First Thing!

    Really fantastic shot !

  • KreddibleTrout replied

thanks etienne. the sound… interesting question. I was thankfully at the quiet end. Aside from the honking in the distance there was a sound of organized confusion with intent. the shuffling of many people with no voice to direct them but all with the same purpose. Hurried quiet communication. The soft clamor of bikes being placed hurriedly, but still lovingly, on the ground (there is only one thing that makes that sound). And from the sidewalks the sound of curiosity. “c’quoi ca?” and “eh! r’guard ca”. then came the cheering and applause when they got back to their feet mixed with their jubilation as bikes were hoisted and held victoriously in the air. A great cheer and the chanting commenced.

thats how i remember it anyway.

Hahaha… No worries. I do understand your pet-peeve on the term ‘nice capture’. It isn’t a capture, it’s an art. The selection of what elements we photograph is already an art. I notice from your photographs that you are very aware of leading lines and natural framing. I think you might have re-ignited my interest in street photography. :)

  • KreddibleTrout replied

leading lines? I don’t know what those are. the one photo lesson I got many years ago was about not taking a shot with a tree or a stop sign growing out of someone’s head, so I do get framing ( natural or otherwise ). I guess I could discern what a leading line is if I gave it some thought (or googled it) but I mostly like to chalk these things up to magic and leave it at that. Heard talk of something called a ‘rule of thirds’ once, I want nothing to do with it.

I’m very glad I could re-ignite your interest in street photography. I take that as a huge compliment. thank you.

guess I’m on the late freight with the comment…but I wanted to leave one anyway….this picture makes quite a statement. Certainly got my attention…

  • KreddibleTrout replied

it’s never too late to get on the freight and comments I always appreciate. (wow… bet you’re glad that sentence ended!)

    thanks Markezz.

oh sure… then I look at your profile & see you’re a writer… my poetry days are obviously well behind me.

    lol….u have quite the personality!

  • KreddibleTrout replied

yes. it fits just right. the ego is kept in check with a healthy amount of insecurity. It’s a fine balance that gets me nowhere (which is where the zen center of me wants to be anyway).

Very cool shot and really cool social statement as art! Don’t recall hearing about this but maybe I am listening to the wrong news…

  • KreddibleTrout replied

Thanks Joanne. these sorts of things don’t get on the news too often. they wouldn’t want to encourage this sort of behavior.
