the s.s. perception
3rd place in Digital Camera Magazine’s Photographer of the Year 2009 Competition – Destination Everywhere Category! . Over 100 000 entries from over 100 countries. There were 30 placings. I was shocked just getting shortlisted. I’m quite humbled .
Last summer I spent living on a boat in the North Pacific on the north west side of The Queen Charlotte Islands in Canada. (left is Graham Islans & right is Hippa) I can’t describe it and I’m one to go on about things. Living with the same 8 people in isolation for 120 days… you need to get away. I spent a lot of time in the kayak. I had never done it before and I fell in love. I kayaked in the ocean. Curious seals befriended me from their cautious distance of about 4 feet. Watching sunsets floating in the middle of nowhere is a priceless experience & I’d often pass up warn dinner to be out there. I quite liked the name of the little plastic vessel. ‘Perception’. That’s what it’s all about for me.
this photo is not selective colour edited. it is a full colour photograph.
shot with my Canon Rebel XT (that’s x-tra trout, baby!)
Look! my very own motivational poster! Coming soon to a gloomy office near you!

I love my boat, i love your picture of you loving your boat
KreddibleTrout replied
i love that you love your boat. let’s end it here as it’s getting a bit weird in here.
sadly, this isn’t my boat but one I was borrowing. I need access to a boat like this. I live on an island now and a boat to love would be lovely. but I have no boat.
Mike Barletta
sometimes an island is enough.
Wendi Donaldson
Beautiful shot, KT….. so glad you found kayaking to your liking. I’ve never done it but I’d love to.
KreddibleTrout replied
I always saw it as a pastime of the privileged and thus snubbed my working class nose at it. something I could never afford. but, as I have with photography, I think I might prioritize one into my life over the next few years. it’s a necessary indulgence for my soul.
thanks for the compliment on the shot.
Wendi Donaldson
Beautifully said….there’s nothing like being out on the water ….just you and the sea.
KreddibleTrout replied
I think I can borrow one from time to time up here on the island from a friend. I hope to. today would have been perfect!
Adam Gormley
Brilliant shot mate, love the angle and title, well done :)
KreddibleTrout replied
thanks adam. there are very few angles attainable in a kayak without the possibility of ending up upside down underwater. a position you don’t want to be in with your camera. this shot almost landed me in just that position.
Alex Cowley
wow, great shot. Just looking at it makes you feel a bit cold and wet
KreddibleTrout replied
hope you’re wearing your woolies.
thanks alex.

I live in my kayak in the summer – well not quite but isn’t it just the best!!? This image is fantastic!
KreddibleTrout replied

very appropriate ! i love the pov in this shot, and the exposure is handled quite well. how far did you go from this vantage point after the shot? big congratulations for winning the contest by the way.
KreddibleTrout replied 2 days ago
the mass of land on the left is Graham Island in the Queen Charlottes and the left is Hippa. I wouldn’t go much past the point on the left as the seas got heavier there. I was pretty much on the cusp of where the seas changed from the calm of Nesto Inlet to the not-so-calm of the north pacific. Once or twice I ventured out to visit some low tide caves, but my cheapo kayak, my novice paddling skills and a rare bit of common sense (or was it worry for my camera?) kept me safe.
thanks for the comment Adrian
