Orpheus' Folly

With pitch wings I fly,
Soaring through fire,
Seeking worth beyond gold,
Distracted by Orpheus’ lyre;
Pressing onward,
Spiraling downward,
Heart wrenching,
Sweat drenching.

Love sought in vain,
Unworthy of mere praise,
I blindly thrust about,
Knowing only these ways;
Just to touch you,
Just to love you,
Heart bleeding,
Soul needing.

Growling in the distance,
Something to fight,
Pull the knife from me,
Death on this wicked night;
In the darkness comes,
The me I’ve become,
Heart pounding,
Crashes sounding.

Bravely battle the cause,
Teeth clenched tightly,
Losing my ground, yield,
Demon overtakes despite me;
Claws tearing,
Eyes blearing,
Heart fading,
Soul jading.
