Watercolour on 325 gsm fine grain paper 30×20 cm
W&N – Burnt Sienna, Yellow Ochre, Sepia, Winsor Blue (Red Shade)

This was from a photograph on Flickr with kind permission of ‘Dennoir’

Going through Angoulême last week to hang the paintings for our expo I saw some blokes digging up the road which reminded me of the Manet painting ‘The road menders on the Rue de Berne’

Thought I’d have a go myself though this is the English version and I’m no ‘Manet’ .

I agree with Cindy….this is a great street scene…..the road crew looks like ones around here…all they seem to do is stand around & talk! Shouldn’t be too hard on them, I guess, since they have to do their jobs right in the middle of traffic & inclement weather. Oh, I just noticed the little old man on the park bench way in the back…how cool is that!!!

  • Thanks Marsha. Workmen leaning on their shovels must be a worldwide phenomenon then. In fairness my thoughts of the photo I used was that it is getting towards the end of the day and they have just loaded up the lorry before going home. On the other hand it doesn’t seem to be a rare sight to find one man in a hole digging while four or five stand around watching and smoking. Nice work if you can get it!
