Château Chabrot, Montbron, France by

Watercolour on 325 gsm fine grain paper 30×20 cm
W&N tubes Alizarin Crimson, French Ultramarine and Cadmium Yellow.

I am due to begin giving lessons to a woman next week who has some pans but wanted to buy some tubes….. only a couple. I told her to get these three and we’d have a go at painting with just 3 primary colours. So I thought I’d better give it a go first.

I paint watercolours and write short stories.

If you would like to pay me lots of money for my stories e-mail me

Wonderful painting Ian….and using only 3 colours. Very inspiring indeed. As with all your paintings, it is the ability you have of capturing so much light that draws me into your art. Beautiful work…..Good Luck with the lessons…..hope you have a great time teaching :-)))

  • Thanks for the kind comment Lisa.
I must confess to being very nervous about the lessons!

There you go again….another feast for our eyes! Beautiful light….and I really like the tree branch in front that adds more depth to the scene. The very best to you regarding the lessons…..I’m sure your student will learn alot from you.

  • Thanks Marsha. Bit worried about the lessons..I know I could teach somebody how to paint this, for example, but concerned about all round expertise!! Like you I am intimidated by landscapes!

Ian, love the very sudtle details hinted at in both the bricks and roof tiles. Also an excellent study in light and shadow.

  • Very kind Jim. Thank God for light and shadow!

This certainly does not look like a limited palette. It has a gorgeous sunlit feel to it.

  • Thanks Joyce Ann. If only it were always so sunny! Today it’s dull and wet!
