You make watercolours do what they’re designed to do Ian.

  • That’s kind of you Jim

I love this close-up – very nice. Your lines & strokes are so simple yet say so much. I’ve noticed this kind of block work design in many of the buildings you’ve painted. Is it a common thing in France overall or generally in the area where you live?

  • Thanks Marsha. The older houses have stone walls and these large blocks of stone are used on the corners and around the doors and windows. The wealthier people, mainly in the towns, rendered over the stones as here, while in the country hamlets and villages the stones are visible. It was a sign of affluence to be able to afford to render over the stones. The trend now is to expose the stone as it is considered more attractive.
