This image shows the duel between Mads Ebler from Denmark and his team and Torvar Mirsky from Australia and his team. They are on their way down the course on the spinnakers on what at first glance may seem as a peaceful ride. However, it isn’t. The trailing boat will try to make a “wind shadow” to the leading one by maneuvering in behind it.
This takes frequent small turns, in each of these turns the mainsail boom will swing to the opposite side and the spinnaker boom will have to be moved to the oppiste lower corner of the spinnaker. In a matter of a few seconds, that is. Actually quite a risky business in rough seas.
