Thank you very much for your nice comment to this also, Deb.
Well, I shall try to explain. After almost all the land was cleared for farmland long time ago, it was found out, that woodland was needed as well. So every village planted an area with trees for the common welfare and every farmer planted a small piece of land to have firewood and to have a place to go hunting. These stone fences were made of available stones, mostly stones picked up from the fields and collected in piles somewhere. They were built to keep the cattle out of the newly planted forests. Wildlife was most welcome to hop over and establish themselves inside the wooded area. That’s why the height isn’t impressive.
Lots of small wooded areas have in the course of time merged to fewer and larger forests. Therefore stone fences criss-cross the forests today.
