Introducing leggings. You’ll never run out of inspiration.

The flag fluttered, dancing in the gentle breeze that wound its way through the multi-coloured tents. Billowing fabrics in red, yellow, blue, and green were muted in the early morning mist.

Nicholas pushed through the folds in his tent, smiling as he stepped into crisp, clear air. Stretching, he turned to watch his blue flag proudly displaying his maroon acorn and antlers signifying his ancient, loyal and strong credentials. How many people read it for what it was? An honest account of his life, and his intent.

Fabric swished from his left, and he turned greet Bruce who stared back blurry eyed.
“Good morning to you sir!” Nicholas grinned at the older man. “A fiine day for jousting.”
Grunting, Bruce retreated, leaving Nicholas to study his dancing crest. The gold Chough on its red background identified Bruce’s belief in his own generosity and intelligence. Like most of their comerades, he had chosen his make-believe crest to show attributes he arrogantly believed he had.

Nicholas shook his head retiring back into his tent to prepare for the day ahead. His choice in crest was deliberate and honest. Long since his allocated heradlry had been eradicated, his choice had been as careful with the new, as others had chosen for his old. A moment’s melancholy washed over him as he remembered the good old days. Then jousting signified something. Honour, devotion, power all radiated from the jousting greens.

Nicholas rode through the crowd on his way to the field, wincing at the bright colours and daring outfits on display. Ladies in trousers…bare knees on show…and open displays of same gender relatipnships… However much times had changed, he hadn’t.

After 700 years cursed wandering, exhiled for his misdemeanor, Nicholas had never thought he would have again thrilled in the thunder of flying hooves, or shuddered with anticipation of a blow dealt or received. Now it was just for show. However long the curse was to last, the rest of his life would be spent playing at a life he could never return to.

Prompt for the Twsited Tales Star Twister 58- Signified. Tricky this one!

Not one of my best I don’t think- it took some editing to get this count.

From what I have found (quickly) the colours and symbols I have used mean:

Gold: Generosity, elevated thinking
Chough: Strategist in battle, watchful of friends
Antlers: Strength and fortitude
Acorn: Antiquity and strength
Red: Warrior or martyr: Military strengh and magnanimity
Maroon: Patient in battle (and yet victorious)

What a tale of old you have written here KM… I love the medieval era, the knights, their standards, jousting… all sounds very romantic but would have been hell really. You have created a real view into this world that is “played” at these days. great twist. x

  • Thank you Teacup! I read a story of a standard bearer or signifer in a fantasy world recently, and this prompt brought me back to it- though signified was trickier to work round than signify etc. Very glad you like this one!

Excellent story Karen, I love the way you’ve twisted in the old theme of the punishment of having to continue interminably. Well done :-)
