Deal

“His name is Deal.” Josephine declared proudly, acutely aware of her pet cowering against the back of her legs. He peered his head round cautiously, so she reached down and scratched his chin for reassurance. No-one was going to hurt him whilst she as around.
“But he’s a…”
“Aren’t you…?”
“Won’t he…”
“How…Why…?”
“I won him in a card game.” Josephine glared at the implications of the crowd of servants who gathered around her, implications driven by fear, stereotypes and encouraged by the monarchs. A fear she wanted nothing to do with. “Now if you will excuse me, I must continue with my task for the Queen.” Reminding them of her status, she pressed forward and the crowd parted.

She could hear Deal’s claws clipping on the cold stone floor, and heared the rustle of the dried straw and herbs as his tail dragged across the loose floor covering. Tapping her shoulder, she encouraged him to resume his usual perch, and effortlessly in a single movement, he launched himself up onto her shoulder.

Reaching the corridor, she hastened automatically past the glazed arches so no-one would see the true reflection. The reflective material had been used to fill the cloistered walkway to keep out the drafts, but acted as a threat to her identity, which would ruin her standing in society and prove a greater threat to her life.
“They’ve got more to worry about than you Deal.” She chuckled maliciously to herself, and Deal nuzzled her cheek in accord. For a moment, certain they were alone, she let herself linger in front of the next window.

A small dragon seemed to hover in mid-air, perched on the shoulder of a non-reflective vampire.

Have you read any Terry Pratchett?

  • One, and snippets of others. I do want to read more…but then I have along list of that. I actually jut finished reading an Anne McCaffrey book, which triggered a weird link in my mind about having pet dragons, hence this…

I have to admit that I guessed this one before the end. Great story and twist! Although I don’t care much for vampyres, they’ve been so overplayed in the last forty or so years, I can get into dragons.(not literally, I hope) At least they have more room for character development (in my view). But this is a really good twister!.JH

  • Thank you!
There has been a lot of Vampire work in ‘recent’ literature, but I hope the dragon/ Vampire combination is fairly unexplored…I have ideas for development (though no plots as yet)…I do agree there is more scope for variety in dragons!
Glad you enjoyed the twist, even if as a clever … you figured it out! lol- well done.
