An Exakta Varex with a top view finder looking at a coffee table scene.

It came with a Field Guide which is a brilliant read! Cameras don’t come with this kind of warning these days:

“The Exakta is not a box camera. It is not foolproof in the sense that those cheap cameras are. Frankly, it is a complicated camera and sensitive to a degree. It is of utmost importance that it should be handled strictly in accordance with the instructions. One should train oneself to avoid accidental and false movements which could damage the camera mechanism”.

I have been passionate about photography since I was a child.
I am based in Tasmania, Australia and I find myself surrounded by photographic inspiration all the time.
I hope you enjoy my work!

    Nicely done, Keith.
I’ve developed a bit of an Exakta thing recently and have bought two Varex IIa models in the last six months. I have a few repair projects waiting for me at the moment, but I have sourced the curtain material I need to replace the shutter curtains of one of them and will hopefully get around to doing this some time in 2014, as I am really keen to runs some film through them. They are so different, but beautifully made, with an abundance of lens options, some very, very good indeed. I have original Zeiss Biotar and Tessar lenses for mine, and know from experience with the same lenses on other cameras that they can perform very well even by todays standards…lovely image.
    Best,
    Brett

  • Thanks Brett,
I found this Exacta by accident. I’ve got only a few vintage cameras in my collection (mostly Canon and Voigtlander), but saw this and loved the design – especially the viewfinder. It does seem to function, but I haven’t been brave enough to run a roll of film through it yet.
This one has a Carl Zeiss Jena lens 50mm (or as 5cm as it states on the lens!).
    All the best, Keith
