This is the Confucius Temple in Beijing. The outside of these pavilions were renovated ahead of the 2008 Olympics, but look carefully and you can see they didn’t renovate the inside. This is one of my favorite places to go in Beijing. It isn’t as crowded with tourists as other places and you can just feel the history. This was the site of years of examinations that allowed even the common people who had the drive to study the chance to rise in the government. There are rows of steles with the names of successful candidates.
All of the colors have meaning. Yellow tile roofs were reserved for buildings associated with the emperor.
