Traditional Chinese bed (called a kang) in a village outside Beijing. The stove in front is lit in winter. The flue runs under the kang and then vents outside. It makes the kang toasty warm. The village was once part of a pony express mail service in China. Chinese officials traveling out to the ‘wild hinterlands’ would stop here on their way out of Beijing. Empress Cixi stayed here as she fled Beijing at the end of her reign.
