Chapter ?: In the Cabin of A Small Commuter Plane
Paul makes his way down the extremely narrow isle of the commuter plane that is taking him to Pease International Trade Port just outside of Portsmouth, New Hampshire, a tiny little airport with less then a handful of flights. He hated to fly as it was but this “puddle jumper”, as his late father would have called it, was definitely not jiving with him. Every inch further he got into the plane the more unsettled he became. He glanced down to see which seat he was in, looking back up at the two rows of seats he realized he was in the last possible row. Paul reaches his seat and puts his two small bags in the overhead compartment thankful that he didn’t pack anymore of his stuff. He sits down next to a woman about his age, she is staring out the window. She was sitting in his assigned seat not that he cared much. He was never big on window seats.“We will be taking off momentarily for our final destination of Pease International Trade Port in Portsmouth, New Hampshire. I hope that you have used the head because we won’t be pulling over. Me and my crew would like to thank you for choosing Mitigator Airlines, have a wonderful flight.” The pilot comes in over the intercom.
“That was not freakin’ funny.” Paul is not appreciating the pilots attempt at humor.
“He’s not being funny, there isn’t a bathroom on this plane.” The girl in his window seat responds still transfixed on the runway.
“I was talking about his delivery. I’m Paul Mills.” Putting out his hand.
“Aries Sikorak. I guess you’re right his delivery was poor.” She turns and shakes his hand.
“Why you heading to Portsmouth?”
“Native, I’m returning home from a very long trip. And you?”
“Looking to get a Chef position at a restaurant there.”
“Flight attendant, prepare for departure.” The pilot making himself heard from the cockpit again.
The flight attendant does the routine for take off as the plane taxies down the runway. She finishes and takes her seat. The plane lifts off.
“I hate these little planes.” Paul trying to retrieve the conversation from before the pilots interruption.
“Did ya` ever see M.A.S.H?”
“The movie or the show?”
“Either, you could have read the book too.”
“It was a book?”
“The book is what the movie was based on which is what the show was based on, but all that isn’t relevant. Remember the copters that carried the wounded? You know in those bubble looking things on the sides.”
“Of coarse, it was like a staple scene.”
“I had to ride in one of those from Paris to Whales.”
“Like I said a very long trip.”
“Wake me when we get there.”
She puts her head on the wall and closes her eyes. Aries immediately falls into a dream where she is wearing black robes and running through a field. She glances over her right shoulder and sees Stonehenge off in the distance. She is very anxious and is trying to get away from something chasing her. She stops running and is panting heavy. A part of her realizes she is dreaming and tries to get a fix on what is going on but the dream is fuzzy. A very hideous clawed hand grabs her on the shoulder, she turns to look who it is and screams herself awake.
“Are you alright?”
Everybody is looking at her and she is still sleeping a bit and she squints them into focus. Then she looks back at Paul.
“Just a nightmare.”
“We are on our final approach. Please prepare for landing.” The pilot announces his plans to land the plane
The flight attendant prepares the cabin for the decent into Pease. The pilot lands his plane effortlessly and this pleases Paul because the landing is the thing about flying he hates the most. The pilot parks his little puddle jumper and his passengers start to gather their belongings.
“It was nice to meet you. Maybe I’ll see you around.” Paul says to Aries as they exit the plane onto the runway.
“Look me up after you get settled.” Aries says to Paul as she starts to walk away. “I have to catch a cab and get home. Good luck with the job hunt.”
“Thanks.” Paul says as he enters the mini terminal to go to the rental car desk.
