Science in Art by klbailey

Posted on May 01, 2008

I have always been interested in both science and art, and so in my most recent paintings I am trying to use this to my advantage – to paint science themed artwork.

I have what seems like a million and one ideas up my sleeve on this theme (if only I can find the time – and the money for the canvases – to paint them). Here are the paintings I’ve already come up with on this topic – they are not intended as accurate representations of scientific topics, but are inspired by them:

Europa Series:

A series of paintings (including a large triptych on canvas) inspired by the colours and patterns on the surface of Jupiter’s moon, Europa. I intend to do more paintings with the colours of moons and planets as my inspiration.

Bubble Trails:

This painting was inspired by a photo of bubble chamber trails – sub-atomic particles travelling through a super-cooled chamber of liquefied gas.

Blue Blood:

Inspired by a photo of a resin cast of blood vessels viewed with a scanning electron microscope.

Sedimentary

Inspired by the layers in sedimentary rock.

Cortex:

Inspired by a cross-section photograph of a human cerebral cortex.

Heat:

Inspired by a magnified picture of heat-loving bacteria – the “extremophile” bacteria which live in places like volcanic springs on the ocean floor.

Cell:

Based on a magnified photograph of a liver cell.

Let me know what you think about this new direction of mine – I’m pretty excited about it!
