Student of the Kansas City Art Institute
Krystal Kuhn
Biography:
Being an artist is a way of life; it requires strength, determination and audacity. I am driven by the love and support of my family and generous members of my hometown. As a student of the Kansas City Art Institute, I am thrown into my element and determined to succeed. I have realized that I am studying with some of the most admired artists in the U.S. My mind and body are continuously challenged. Despite all of these newly discovered experiences, I have managed to adapt very quickly and realized that I love college.
About the work:
I grew up in the heart of the California Foothills. I am a hometown girl who is now living in the city learning and coping with the difference between my youth and growing into adulthood. I am a storyteller. I make up stories as well as tell stories about myself through my work. I like to think that as the artist/storyteller, I supply the viewer with subjects that create their own stories. My work has a sense of ambiguity, in that it is capable of being understood in many ways. This past year I experienced a breast cancer scare, alleviated by a biopsy; this caused me to evaluate my life. During this I realized that a disease could not only be physical but can also be mental. I have so much respect for women that are dealing with breast cancer. I began researching the breast cancer cell and studied its form. I find its cellular form to be quite beautiful and intriguing in all its fatality. Many of my works within the past year dealt with this subject. I feel that as artists, we are lucky in that we can express our feelings and happenings through our work.
Awards & Accomplishments:
Within the past two years at the Kansas City Art Institute, I became an intern at Chameleon Arts and Youth Development and the Office of Homeless Liaison in Kansas City. There I worked with underprivileged children who are provided with a creative and stable environment. I also received the coveted Outstanding Foundation Student Achievement award. This past year I have been involved in many campus related activities. I was asked to explain my story amongst six-hundred donors during the Kansas City Art Institute Live Action of 2009. During the month of January, I was the first student to be featured in Portfolio: The art of giving school newsletter. I am also currently in contact with a curator who is interested in showing my work in Japan. These past two years I have made the Dean’s List at KCAI excelling in my studies. I plan to pursue this upward motion and keep promoting my work, speaking to the public.
