A Royal Elk in Jackson, Wyoming by

A wild elk steps quickly in the Elk Refuge, Jackson, Wyoming (USA). There is a great deal of controversy as to whether this practice is wise, with the herd becoming more and more reliant upon unnatural feedings.

With Wyoming’s current policies on wolves, the herd’s natural predator which weed out the old and sick, is the herd a healthy one? Some hunters, who want targets within an easily reachable range in the hunting season, would have wolves annihilated so that they have more game.

It’s a cause of concern for both conservationists, and ethical hunters.

I am deeply concerned about environment, wildlife, and animal welfare, feeling a strong commitment to leaving the planet in better shape for new generations. Therefore, I support a number of charities that reflect those interests.

I have a degree in English and Library Science, but if I had my life to live over, I would have loved to have been a photographer, writer, and/or National Park ranger.

  • Thanks, so much, Ann. A Royal elk is one with a certain number of points on their horns. (I forget how many.)

Great shot of this amazing animal, Nancy. Protecting wildlife on preserves and so on is a double-edged sword, that’s for sure. And it always irritates me the way wolves are maligned—they are magnificent animals, too and no more deserve to be culled than any other species.

  • Thanks, Laurie. I couldn’t agree with you more. Wolves are magnificent animals playing a valuable role in the health of an ecosystem. Unfortunately, they have been pushed to the brink of extinction in the lower 48. As for Alaska, as long as they have enemies like Palin pursuing them by helicopter, all for the sake of hunters, there is a problem. (Don’t get me started. LOL) Wyoming, Idaho, and Montana are the worst offenders.
