This marble boat is located on the grounds of the Empress’ Summer Palace about 9 miles outside of Beijing, in northern China. It does NOT float.
In 1998 the grounds, which are famous for its classical gardens, was made a world heritage site by Unesco. It was constructed in the Jin Dynasty 1115-1234, and extended continuously.
The Empress dowager, Cixi took over the grounds, and embezzled navy funds for her own benefit, wasting money on trivial constructions like this marble boat for parties and gatherings.
