Myself and fellow shooter John Sperry decided to make a return early yesterday morning to catch the sunrise at St Male outside of Estes Park, Colorado. Needless to say getting up at 330am was well worth it, as the day would yield some excellent shots!

The weather was completely wild and insane, when we arrived. We were on the leading front edge of a snow storm with the the sun making one heck of an amazing sunrise behind us. Wild as heck with the storm blowing down over the mountains, but the color and light was remarkable, we were just far enough and in the outflow of the storm, that the snow was falling, and the light completely diffused. If we had driven maybe a mile west to behind the church, we would be getting hammered from it all.

It was something though, watching the sunrise do battle with this snow storm, all the while trying to click the shutter in wind gusts that were very strong. Thank God for Puffin Pads is all I can say!

Anyways, I hope you all like it
John

Well John, you must be so pleased that such an early start and braving the conditions harvested such a return that was probably witnessed by no others. The light is indeed fantastic, you can really see the effect that the sun has had and that snow storm blowing over the mountains provides a dramatic backdrop.

  • Thanks, sometimes it just really pays off to get there really early…thankfully this time of the year the light is a little later than say in summer
