Denver is loaded with old signage, especially along Colfax Avenue, the longest avenue in all of America. It hearkens back to the good old days of America, in the 40s and 50s, showing the lifestyle, architecture, and design on the times. For several years now I have been working on a side project to photograph and document it all, to capture it before it is all gone. Now and then I get odd looks, have gotten screamed at a few times, but once I tell them what I am doing, they usually are pretty taken back by how I am trying to document it all.

This sign is one of my all time favs, I last shot it 7 years ago, and have always wanted to get back to getting it again, I recently did.

Captured using my Sony a550 and a Minolta 18-200mm lens, in camera HDR +3, cross processing done through Lightroom and final touchup in PS CS5

I hope you all like it
John

Well done John!! Is that horse still on top of that one restaurant on Colfax? I recall there were rumblings of controversy at one point because someone said it was false advertising!!

  • Davie’d Chuckwagon? yes it sure is, that place is such a landmark, it will forever be there I think. That is one place that is REALLY awesome, I really want to get over there and do some night shots of it at some point or just before dawn and do some long exposures. They have a website http://www.davieschuckwagon.com Talk about sheer Americana!

Holy cow! I pulled this photo up because I thought it looked cool, and it does, but realized I’ve drank there before.

Nice work and great idea about Colfax.

  • hey thanks, it is a project I have been working on for several years now..I was just looking at your work, you have some nice shots. Honestly though you look rather familiar, are you pretty active on the local rockabilly scene at all?
