Suggestions on how to make RedBubble better

Greetings….

I have been spending a little bit of time lately over on 500px who seems like they really have their stuff together (mostly except for one major issue with people trolling peoples images and voting them down with the dislike button for their own self worth…it is their greatest downfall and refusal to change it)

There are a few things which I noticed that I wonder if RB couldn’t incorporate…

  • I love the fact that the display images are rather large by default…very nice…imagine a shot like this in that size on RB!?!?
  • Metadata is retained within every single image which is uploaded, from all keywords to exif info, even down to the lens the shot was taken with….that IMO is rather slick!
  • I like the thumbnails to the bottom right of the image and how it displays the most popular ones…nice!
  • Ability for multiple uploads and direct export out through Lightroom, which RB has said they were working on 2 1/2 years ago?

Just a few thoughts I would love to see implemented on here!

Just remember that with multiple uploads at 500px you can only add 20 images a week with a free account.

  • yep, though 20 images in a week is a lot.

I didn’t know you can only add 20 per week, but I have to agree Johnny the display images are what drew me. All you get is a little square here unless you " open image" . I just joined, lets see how much my time permits me to keep both. I hope RB hears your suggestions .. soon.

  • Not to mention the size issue of panos on RB…they are rather ‘ack!’ lol

I have joined up with 500px but haven’t uploaded anything yet. I’d have to re edit all my photos to post them there but I am worried that with the larger size and no watermarks that work will be stolen by art thieves. There are a lot of them on the web :(

  • Ok Daniela, I am going to be honest with you, and blunt….so you know ahead of time. lol ok?

Do you honestly think your work is THAT good that it would be stolen when you are on the same exact site with some of the most recognized and well respected nature photographers, ever?

Ian Plant, Scott Kelby, Russ Bishop, Joe Rossbach and a ton others? While you are worried about that, pros like Ian http://500px.com/ianplant are posting and getting their images seen. For every second you worry about image theft, they are getting exposure. Keep in mind these are pros, and the very best of the very best, published constantly and whose work hangs in some of the best nature photography galleries known to man.

Agreed it’d save me a bit of messing around to not have to add exif to my images! Not sure I’d want to encourage people to upload multiples though, it’d mess with my feed too much :) As for the sizing, there’s been a LOT of people complaining about the redbubble size being ripped off, so I can’t see it being a popular thing with some. The presentation does look good though, I must admit! Alt+PrtScn still works….so watermarks are a definite need, imho!

Not a fan of the voting thing though, and I can see why it’d be abused….sadly there are some very jealous people out there :(

Thanks for the heads up though, John!

  • I honestly dislike watermarks, unless it is the kind RB has now which works just fine. I don’t want something that takes away from the viewers experience at all, which would tank sales…

oh, have you mentioned any of those in the Suggestions and Feedback Forum John? It’s the fastest way to get their attention, especially if they don’t have someone scouring the journals for feedback. :)

  • nope, was tired when I wrote this and am going to do that now, thanks!

I’m with Mel on the Multiple Upload side. I browse through the recent images often and have seen some who upload 20+ images in a very short space of time. All this does is push everyone’s work further back in the field and some I’ll end up not finding. But that’s how I like to look for works here.

  • I think I am more of the POV that your best work should only be shown on RB, I mean this is the place to sell it right? I have seen several people upload images from their backyard BBQ that makes me say “huh??” I would like the ability to export out through Lightroom, which would really be pretty ace

Honestly I can see Daniela’s photos photos being posted just as well as any other nature photographer on there. Without a link back or credit. It happens for sure, especially with photos of animals. That is where a watermark of some sort is nice to have in my opinion.

Exporting from LR would be good. You’d think that a Mobile App for this site would have been done by now(unless I’ve missed it). Panoramas do look crap here and maybe another framing option should have been developed a long time ago. I’d like the report function to go to RB first and not the artist – it actually should say it’ll go to the person you are reporting first. I’d like RB owners to use their search function and try for example, a Super Hero’s name and remove the works that infringe without relying on your members to do so.

I do like the way that 500px have about 3 different Twitter accounts to promote the work on their site. Maybe RB could start actually using their twitter. 474 Tweets from RB? Last one on the 21st of June? That explains the low number of tweets.

And I have to agree with you on the right click , water mark thing.. who is gonna steal my work? ha ha and also if the pros arent worried, then I should be Ok. plus if they really really want it bad enough, they will figure out a way to get it LOL.. Panos look awsome there. please post a follow up journal as to how RB admins respond to your suggestions, curious to hear what they are working on. Thanks J

Good points made, John. Pity RB can’t be more responsive
