So, I have been thinking…maybe it’s time that RedBubble get an update and by that, I mean an actual REAL update.
The Case For Larger Images On RedBubble
When I come here the images are so small compared to everywhere else. I mean look as an example how images are displayed on “500px”;http://500px.com/photo/34053244 It is simple, clean and also effective. The size is what really gets the viewer and that is how artwork should look. It shouldn’t be just another image on the internet but something which really engulfs and envelops the viewer so it puts them in the scene itself, a feeling like they are standing there among it. It isn’t just 500px which does this however, it is every single site on the internet now basically where photos and art can be seen, bought and/or hosted as flickr just completely changed to a larger format as well.
Why? The goal of being on RedBubble is to sell your work. If we compare one of RB’s largest competitors, Fine Art America for example, we can see the difference in image sizes immediately. Look at this example on “FAA”;http://fineartamerica.com/featured/water-on-mar... and now look at this example using my own photo here on “RB”;http://www.redbubble.com/people/kkart/works/103... This is day and night and as they say “presentation is everything”
BAM! Larger Is Better!
I’ll take this one step farther. Below is a comparison at 100% of the image sizes between FAA & RB, what someone sees when they first come to each site, respectively. The sunflower shot is my own from RB and overlayed on top of someone else’s image from FAA.
See that? That is just a massive difference. Huge really. In advertising you have less than a second to get the viewers attention and considering this is essentially what we are doing on RB with trying to sell our artwork, well which one do you think is going to stand out more to the viewer? Of course the larger image is.
How about a comparison with 500px?
How about a comparison with deviantART? Which is perhaps the the biggest difference of them all with the image at a full 400% larger than on redBubble!
I am not going to lie to you guys, deviantART is running circles around redBubble in terms of sales since they upgraded the site and went to a larger format. It never used to be that way but my sales have tanked on RedBubble big time. Perhaps some of it has to do also with how unfriendly this site is on a mobile platform as well? It’s painful to say the least and now considering the majority of internet traffic comes from a mobile platform…well….not good.
RedBubble are you guys hiring because right now you need someone like me to give this site what it truly needs and deserves, a shake up.
