Livin' On The Edge
Livin’ On The Edge
Mt Evans, Colorado 14,240 feet high, and here were these Mountain Goats standing right on the edge…...quite a long ways down I might add. The Mother was NOT real pleased with me by any means, well, more with my German Shepherd Klaus, but almost took out her frustrations on yours truly. Her young found me quite curious as I stood in the middle of the road, outside of the car snapping this, and started approaching me. He was maybe only 10 feet away and slowly started getting closer, when all the sudden my dog happened to realize from the back seat what was going on, and went complete ape. I am guessing he must have thought baby Mountain Goat was a threat to me. About that time, Mom came running over and put herself between me and her young, staring at me, deciding what to do. Well needless to say I backed up slowly behind the car and Klaus by this time was none thrilled at all, I think if she would have charged, my dog would have gone through the glass lol However on the flip side, he did get their attention which made some for some pretty dramatic images

I had a very similar experience on Mt Evans. My Akita was in the car napping (altitude, I think) as I was out with the tripod doing some landscape shops. A group of bighorns walked right past me – young and mature. One of the kids stood right next to me – inches away – for the longest time, while the others milled close by. It was right about that time that my dog woke up and went absolutely nuts. The bighorns scattered in all directions, with me grabbing my tripod & camera and holding on for dear life. Quite the exciting evening.

Look at that long horn pointing menacingly! The fact that the other horn is missing tells me she may have charged someone or something else that came too close to her baby! This is a superb photo, something you can get only at such altitudes-
where else could you get that kind of background? You didn’t miss a thing here-the shagginess of the coat is beautifully detailed; mother and child are in a classic pose; exposure is just right and that wasn’t easy to get considering all that white in those fluffy clouds. This is wonderful, well worth your ascent to the top!Diana-Lee Saville
