There’s something very special about the silhouette of Rangitoto. It is almost symmetrical. An island volcano that hasn’t erupted in around 300 years, it is named for the incredible sight at it’s eruption. The sky was red as blood. (rangi means sky, toto means blood)
In Auckland, wherever you can see the East coast you can likely see this island. Brought up on Auckland’s North Shore I favour this silhouette. For me it is a homely and warm image. It speaks of quiet beach walks or family picnics.
I like how it has different humps depending on which part you’re looking at. From my family’s home it’s 4 humps (I think!). Aw, now I’m all homesick :(
Awww homesickness… Yeah good ol Rangi ‘ll do that to you. And it’s almost symetrical too but the humps definitely are different in shape depending on which part of the harbour shoreline you are viewing the island from. Hugs for you Firedrake! K
