Haiku Exercise #2

Surprisingly so
Divinity lies within
Defined without.

Being of flesh
Mistakes are to be made
Life lessons given.

Lesson give rise
New joys and passions
The soul made anew.

Morpheus descends
Bringer of earthly release
Painless dreaming peace.

Haiku Exercise #2 by

Japanese Haiku writing is more challenging than you would think. The dictionary has a very simple definition that only mentions using allusions. The structure though, must follow a certain format for it to be considered a Haiku. I’ve taken two separate poetry classes from two different universities. Having experienced both teachers….. I found that for one Haiku writing was spontaneous and fun. The other instructor was uptight and demanded not only following austere instructions, but required rewrites of ALL work. The first professor was a lot more exciting and I found that helps stimulate creativity. I’ll leave Haiku writing to the people who invented them! lol
