Yesterday I visited and was fortunate to be able to photograph the shearing at Deeargee Woolshed on the Northern Tablelands of New South Wales, Australia.
Sheepdogs play an important role and are an integral part of the shearing process. Watching these dogs at work was fantastic, they work hard and fast and seem to love it.
This one waits patiently at the holding pen for the end of ‘smoko’.
Photograph taken 18/8/2010 – untouched apart from crop.

My grandfather worked for Mr A.A. Dangar on the Gostwyck station in 1890.I have just been reading one of the letters he sent home describing his time working in the Wool shed. He descibes the drive shaft running the length of the building, to drive the shears. It is fantastic to see it in your photo, and also all the other fantastic photos of the shearing. In 1890 23 shearers sheared 45,000 sheep in 5 weeks, with the best man shearing 2,400 in that time. Thank you for bringing history alive. It is so great to see exactly where grandfather was working 120 years ago.
Hi Stephen, thank you so much for sharing this wonderful story with me, so special. I’m truly happy to have been able to bring a little of your grandfather’s past/history alive for you, it really is a gorgeous old shed full of character and gave me a wonderful sense of nostalgia the entire time I was there.
Thanks again so much :D
