Ode to Mr Percival by Kitsmumma

Available to buy on…

As I child I saw a little Australian film called Storm Boy which featured a pelican called Mr Percival. I loved that film so much and the memory of it has stayed with me for 30 years I can’t believe I just said that!. Storm Boy, Fingerbone Bill and Mr Percival, every pelican from that point became a “Mr Percival”.

I’ve also never forgotten The Chant of Jimmie Blacksmith but that’s an entirely different memory……!!

“bird like that never die”

Ahhh yes, love to see those pelicans flying and I love to visit the Coorong in SA and remember Storm Boy. I met the real Mr Percival at Marineland in SA in the 1970s. That was pretty cool :-)

  • You met ‘the’ Mr Percial? How wonderful! Such a special film. I would love to visit the SA coast. It looks so rugged and unspoiled in the film, hope it is still like that. Thanks so much for your great comment.

Seeing that title just bought back so many memories!

  • It all came flooding back to me a few months ago when I bought the “30 year Anniversary” edition of Storm Boy and sat down and watched it with my 4 yr old son. I cry everytime I see this film and have never forgotton the last line spoken by Fingerbone….“bird like that never die”………..
    I can’t belive it’s been 30 years, how old do I feel!!

Such a beautiful, ungainly bird and photo, and lovely memory. Thanks for the link.

  • They are amazing birds, and huge, their wingspan is about 2 metres! If you get the chance, see the film, it is now an Aussie classic!!

Great capture! And I wrote down the title “Storm Boy” to see if I can find it.

  • I hope you can find it Debra, it’s magical and very beautiful, an Aussie classic. Thanks so much for the comment.

Perfect capture! I love to watch them fly back to their rock in the evening all in a row.

  • Thanks Tama, I only get to see them when we visit the coast although you do occassionally see them flying inland! They have such a lovely, gentle look about them.

Does the film have a sad ending? Rather like hunters shooting Bambi’s mother?

  • hehehe!! yes and no. It teaches you in a very beautiful way that death is a part of life and that the spirit lives on although you should probably have the tissues handy!

Kitsmumma I will BM you when I find my various pics, I visited the Coorong area and Eudunda after Colin Thiele passed away. I was given the Storm Boy dvd just this week, been many years since I have watched it. Might do that this weekend.
